I've accomplished more than I thought possible - good career, getting to visit far and strange lands, great kids (with amazing opportunities of their own), and running long distances. All because of the great support from people around me. People who took the time to care. To stop and offer some advice or guidance - no matter how small.
The staff at the Y has consistently helped - even pushed - me and my kids to do more and take on new challenges. From water-skiing, to leadership roles they have been there for my family expecting nothing in return other than a smile.
I feel the same way about the running community. Almost purely by accident I've met some of the neatest people. People who care about their family, having fun and encouraging others.
This group always has something supportive to say about shoes (tied to tight), mood (need more salt), and finishing a race or training run (run to the next pole).
Of course, peer-pressure is a slippery slope. After a while you can't help but believe anything is possible and, as I said at the beginning, I think it is -- maybe...
Recently my buddy Roman said "We have the perfect race for you." Roman and others have repeatedly suggested I run a 100 mile race. Of course they knew me well and had covered every possible excuse I've had in the past - It's (almost) in my own backyard, plenty of support, ample training time, shoes in good shape, [Curse them!!]
So, that said, I'll be running the 100 mile Tulsa Urban Adventure Race on June 6th and 7th. The course is four 25-mile loops around Tulsa. It includes many local favorites such as the Golden Driller, QTs, Sonic, RunnersWorld Tulsa, my house, Brady District, Blue Dome District, Lafortune Park and many others.
I know the support of my friends will help get me through this event. Several people have committed to donating to the Y - $1 per mile that I finish. Consider doing that too. I am donating $1 for every mile that I run this year. This is your chance to help. Not only to help me, but to help The Y serve more kids in Tulsa.
